Wine Spectator honors
Twelve West Virginia restaurants were listed in the annual “Wine Spectator” restaurant awards, Gazette wine blogger John Brown reports.
Only 2,880 restaurants across world have received the “Award of Excellence,” including nine restaurants in West Virginia. The Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, The Greenbrier’s Main Dining Room and its Prime 44 West received “Best of Awards of Excellence.” Only 788 restaurants in the world achieved that distinction.
The state restaurants receiving “Awards of Excellence” are: Bridge Road Bistro and The Chop House, both in Charleston; Ember in Snowshoe Mountain Resort; The Glasshouse Grille and Sargasso, both in Morgantown; La Bonne Vie at Mountaineer Racetrack in Chester; Provence Market Cafe in Bridgeport; Savannah’s in Huntington; and Spats in Parkersburg’s Blennerhassett Hotel.
According to the magazine, “Wine Spectator’s restaurant wine list awards program recognizes restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to the cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers.
“To qualify for an award, the list must present complete, accurate wine information. It must include vintages and appellations for all selections, including wines by the glass …” The three categories of awards are: “Awards of Excellence;” “Best of Awards of Excellence;” and the “Grand Award.”
Trinity’s Table feeds record number
More than 180 hungry people received a free dinner July 29 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1600 Kanawha Blvd. E. That’s a record for Trinity’s Table, a group of volunteers who gather to feed adults and children in need of a meal every Sunday evening when other soup kitchens are closed.
The 16 to 17 volunteers busily simmered goulash, shredded cabbage for coleslaw, sliced fresh peaches and tomatoes and set up the dining hall to serve a record number of diners. They clean up afterward.
Organizers Ed and Eunice Burch procure food from Mountaineer Food Bank, as well as buying meat at greatly reduced prices from T&M; Meats in Cross Lanes. Libby Chatfield, owner of Charleston Bread, donates bread not sold on Saturday to the Sunday suppers at Trinity’s Table.
For information on donating to or volunteering at Trinity’s Table, call 304-342-5212.
